Oct. 15, 2025 – This month, after more than 200 years in business, library book distributor Baker & Taylor announced they would close. The Cedar Rapids Public Library has utilized Baker & Taylor as a book supplier for many years. The loss of this vendor will have a direct impact on our services. Materials will need to be processed internally, which means more work for staff and may increase wait times for some materials.
We have been working with alternate vendors over the past several months to ensure there are efficient pathways forward. Even though it may take a little longer, we are confident our patrons will have continued access to new titles.
As this transition has made local and national news, many people have reached out asking how they can help. There are a few ways you can support the library during this transition:
Support our Friends of the Library Big Book Sale: The Friends of the Cedar Rapids Public Library regularly hold sales to raise funds for library programs and projects. They will hold their 2025 Fall Book Sale at the Downtown Library from Friday, Oct. 31 to Sunday, Nov. 2. A special members-only preview sale is set for Thursday, Oct. 30, from 5-7:30 pm. Anyone can join the Friends and get this special access. Learn more.
Donate to the Foundation: The Cedar Rapids Public Library Foundation serves as the vehicle through which private funds are used to enhance the library’s collections, programs, and technologies while supporting the library’s Strategic Initiatives of Access, Connection, and Service. Anyone who wishes to help add to the library collection of materials, promote new services, or enhance access, can do so by donating to the Foundation. Learn more.
Advocacy: Support the library by talking to your friends, neighbors, and elected officials about what the library means to you. Tips on being a library advocate can be found on our website, and you can even sign up for Advocacy Alerts. Learn more.
Get a library card: Last but certainly not least, make sure you and the people in your life have a library card! Sign up online or visit one of our locations to get started. Using the library is one of the best and most fun ways to share your support.
