Meet the Cedar Rapids Public Library staff

Our series profiling Library staff continues with Ladd Library Branch Supervisor Tina Pipkin, who has been with the Library since 2015.

What does your job typically include?

Working closely with the Ladd staff and problem solving, helping with reference as needed, and helping patrons with library related questions, issues, and needs.

What made you want to work here?

Previously I worked at the Marion Public Library – when I graduated from library school it made sense to go to a place where I could utilize my knowledge and talents. Thus began a journey where I went from working strictly Public Service to becoming a Supervisor at Ladd.

What’s your favorite part about working here?

I love helping our patrons. Everyday offers an opportunity for us to do something amazing.

Do you have any moments or stories from the Library that stand out that you would want to share with patrons?

The moments I enjoy the most are when we have technology questions. It is such fun helping a patron figure out our databases (how to download an ebook, listen to an audiobook, etc.). It is also fun to work with patrons who are unfamiliar with technology and sit with them and broaden their horizons. Many patrons come in to the library intimidated and fearful – it is great to sit with them and help them get over that fear and feel confident in themselves.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I do plenty of reading, and I LOVE walking my 6 month old Goldendoodle, Marlo with my family.

What’s your favorite book genre? Why?

My favorite book genres are a tie – SciFi and Horror. I love SciFi because you constantly are thinking “Wow, this is so cool – Could this happen??” I love Horror because I enjoy the buildup of fear and the unknown. What is fun is when you get a SciFi Horror novel like Infected by Scott Sigler – HEAVEN!

Do you have a favorite book or author? What do you like about them?

My favorite author would be Stephen King – I think what is so amazing about him is his ability to pull you in with words. He has written so many remarkable books which make you really think and work toward being a better human overall. His books often fit that SciFi Horror piece for me too, which I relish. I get so excited when a new book comes out by him – my favorite book overall would be The Stand. I also have a deep appreciation for his son, Joe Hill. He writes similarly to his father, maybe just a bit darker, but nonetheless incredible – The Fireman was spectacular.

If you could pick a superpower, what would it be?

I would want enhanced memory, which would allow me to ingest information quickly and efficiently with the ability to share as needed.
