Feb. 23, 2026 – The Cedar Rapids Public Library is made possible by our incredible staff. And we are staffed by book lovers. To celebrate the people who keep our library running, we're highlighting different staff members and books they love.
Patron Services Specialist Elysha H. has been with the library since 2018. Patron Services Specialists greet you when you come in, help you sign up for library cards, use the computers, find the books you’re looking for, and more.
"I help people connect with the resources they are seeking. I love how every day is different, and I never know what kind of fun challenges are ahead of me," she said. "Some days I'm helping make photocopies, library cards, and finding books. Other days I'm helping with job applications; but no matter what I'm doing, it's always a rewarding day serving my community."

"The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue" by V. E. Schwab
I love "The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue" because I'm drawn to stories about Faustian bargains and the consequences of the deals characters are willing to make.
"Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier
"Rebecca" is a masterclass in romantic gothic psychological suspense. Alfred Hitchcock even chose it as the basis for his first American film adaptation.
"Slewfoot: A Tale of Bewitchery" by Gerald Brom
"Slewfoot" spoke to me for its themes of control through religion and reclaiming one's voice. It's a brutal story that supports women's rights and women's wrongs.
"Rules for a Knight" by Ethan Hawke
"Rules For A Knight" is a book I return to often. It's simple, grounding and reminds me of the kind of person I want to be.
"The Giver" by Lois Lowry
"The Giver" has stuck with me since I first read it as a child. It evokes big questions about conformity, choice, and empathy.
