April 7, 2024 – Ready, set, library! National Library Week is April 7–13, 2024, and the Cedar Rapids Public Library encourages everyone in the community to visit the library to explore all the library has to offer.

Libraries give us a green light to experience something truly special: a place to connect with others, learn new skills, and pursue our passions through book clubs, story times, technology access, crafting classes, lectures, and more. The Cedar Rapids Public Library offers a wide array of programs, classes and resources, including free access to technology such as 3D printers in the Maker Spaces and neighborhood outreach with the Mobile Technology Lab.

And libraries play a pivotal role in economic development by providing resources and support for job seekers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses. The Cedar Rapids Public Library supports Cedar Rapids with services such as in-person assistance at the Opportunity Center and digital access to JobNow and VetNow with Brainfuse, as well as help applying for Micro Loans for small businesses.

No matter where you find yourself on the roadmap through life’s journey — preparing for a new career, launching a business, raising a family, or settling into retirement — the Cedar Rapids Public Library offers the resources and support you need and an inclusive and supportive community where you will feel welcome.

So, get ready to explore, become inspired, and connect with others this National Library Week. The Cedar Rapids Public Library is there for you, all the way to the finish line.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries of all types across the country each April.

Here's what's happening throughout the week:

Monday, April 8: Right to Read Day is a National Day of Action in support of the right to read. The State of America's Libraries Report will be released, including Top Ten Most Challenged Books of 2023.

Tuesday, April 9: National Library Workers Day: We want to acknowledge the amazing people who make our library possible. From shelvers to public service associates to programming specialists to materials librarians and more, it takes a team of dedicated people working hard to serve our community. Our libraries are made up of so much more than books and walls - they are made up of people!

Wednesday, April 10: National Library Outreach Day: We are giving a big shout-out to our dedicated library staff who take the library out into the community. Our staff bring story times and activities to area parks, preschools and schools, visit job fairs to help write and print resumes, bring computers and one-on-one assistance to community partners like ASAC Heart of Iowa and Willis Dady Works, offer parenting classes with partners like YPN, facilitate book discussions at the Juvenile Justice Detention Center, and more.

We are so proud and honored to be your community's library - wherever in the community we are needed.

Thursday, April 11: Take Action for Libraries Day: Take a look at our Advocacy Toolkit for ways you can take action for libraries in your own life. Sign up for Advocacy Alerts, share your library story, and learn how you can support libraries all year.
