Program Description

Event Details

Learn about how peace activist cookbooks ignite activism, enable community identity, and subvert women’s domestic roles. Iowa State University Associate Professor Dr. Abby M. Dubisar will present her research on how cookbooks and other “feminine” genres connect with 21st-century trends in “new domesticity” and radical home economics, positioning the kitchen as the place where gender and politics ferment.

This presentation is funded by Humanities Iowa and the State Historical Society, Inc. of Iowa.

Dr. Dubisar earned her PhD at Miami University of Ohio, where she wrote a dissertation about women peace activists’ rhetorical strategies. She earned her MA at Ohio State University and her BA at the University of Missouri—Kansas City. She has presented her research at national and international conferences and teaches courses in popular culture analysis, gender and communication, writing and rhetoric.
