In the Library world we talk a great deal about the importance of providing access to technology in our communities. According to the recently released Public Library Funding & Technology Access study conducted by the American Library Association, 83% of Iowa libraries offer the only free access to computer/Internet in their communities. The national average is 67%. More than just offering computers and Internet access, Iowa libraries offer licensed databases, homework help, virtual reference, ebooks and downloadable audio books.
Amazon announced today that it is working with OverDrive (our ebook supplier) to begin lending Kindle ebooks through libraries.
On Friday the public service staff of the Cedar Rapids Public Library took the day off from serving patrons directly to receive special training in readers’ advisory. Readers’ advisory is a service which involves suggesting fiction and nonfiction titles to a reader through direct or indirect means.
OverDrive, the service the Cedar Rapids Public Library uses for ebooks, has just announced the release of a BlackBerry App that will allow direct library ebook downloads. This free application is available on the OverDrive website.
From the outset, the Library’s Board of Trustees charged the project design group with achieving a LEED Gold rating for the building. While the Gold Rating remains our minimum requirement, we are striving for a Platinum LEED rating. This would be one of only a handful of LEED Certified Platinum buildings in the state and one of the most sustainable libraries in the country.

The Cedar Rapids Public Library West has been working towards this transformation for several weeks and today things are looking completely different! Our self-checks are now installed and working and our circulation desk has been moved to its new location to act as a laptop bar.
Prior to the flood of 2008, the Cedar Rapids Public Library had established self-check systems in place.
