Meet Downtown Library Branch Supervisor Trevor Hanel, the latest in our ongoing series of staff profiles. Trevor started as a shelver in October 2007.

What does your job typically include?

One of the most exciting things about my job is that I build many relationships with patrons. I assist staff in resolving issues with library accounts, technology, and supporting a library environment that is safe and enjoyable for a diverse population of people.

What made you want to work here?

I worked for a few years as a shelver in the Children’s Department of my hometown library and enjoyed being around books and people. It was a great experience. When I moved to Cedar Rapids and considered a career change from personal training, I responded to a job posting for a shelver until I could figure out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I have been here ever since.

What’s your favorite part about working here?

I never know what is going to happen from day to day.

Do you have any moments or stories from the Library that stand out that you would want to share with patrons?

There are very few places where people can go to get honest customer service. We aren’t selling anything. We listen to people to get them what they need, even if it is referring them to other organizations, free of charge. And all of this is strictly confidential. We are truly here to serve the public. Our staff thrive on finding a way to make a difference in our patrons’ lives, which makes our community shine just a little more.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I enjoy landscaping, immersing myself in nature, and relaxing with friends and family.

What’s your favorite book genre? Why?

I love utopian and dystopian sci-fi. I really get into the possibilities of what could be, both good and bad. I also enjoy some non-fiction, primarily science and history.

Do you have a favorite book or author? What do you like about them?

I have a number of favorites. One that sticks with me is Origin Story: A Big History of Everything by David Christian. I enjoy sweeping narratives that tie together pieces from multiple disciplines. It feels great to have more dots connect.

If you could pick a superpower, what would it be?

A space and time traveler.
