UPDATE July 28: The initial estimates of time it will take to reopen are still being gathered. The Downtown Library is closed until further notice. We will update with more information next week. Additionally, we are working with the City to identify and share information on alternative cooling center locations as the weather heats up.
Original Post: At approximately 3:45 pm on Wednesday, July 27, a fire broke out in a light fixture above the Commons of the Cedar Rapids Downtown Public Library. The fire was quickly extinguished. The sprinkler system activated in the appropriate zone. The extent of any damage is unknown at this time.
The building was safely evacuated with no injuries. Books and library materials do not appear to have been impacted by any water damage.
The Downtown Library will remain closed through Thursday, July 28, and until any necessary cleanup is complete.
Hold times and due dates will be extended. Patrons can access library resources at the Ladd Library (3750 Williams Blvd SW) or online at CRLibrary.org/library-at-home.
Please stay tuned to the library’s website at CRLibrary.org and social media for updates.
