Meet the Cedar Rapids Public Library staff
This week in our ongoing series introducing Library staff, meet Patron Services Specialist Karla McMurrin. Karla has worked at the Library since 1980 and has held numerous jobs at the Library over the last 41 years. These days, she can usually be found Downtown.
What made you want to work here?
The short version: I worked in my high school library and have always loved knowledge. My first job at the library was taking books to preschools, and a prerequisite was knowing how to drive a truck. My farm background helped with that!
What’s your favorite part about working here?
Always – the interaction with patrons of all ages.
Do you have any moments or stories from the Library that stand out that would want to share with patrons?
I’ve worked in all three buildings of Cedar Rapids Public Library history, beginning with the Third Avenue Carnegie Library and continuing with the First Street building. I’ve worked at the (now gone) Kenwood Branch, the Edgewood Branch, the Westdale locations, including Ladd Library, and now the Downtown Fifth Avenue building. I’ve worked in the children’s department and the public service area. I’ve met a lot of people and learned so, so much!
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
I like to sew, knit, and bicycle, and, of course, read.
What’s your favorite book genre?
I still love to read children’s books and teen novels.
If you could pick a superpower, what would it be?
The ability to put more hours in a day!
