Curbside Holds Pickup Begins May 22

Curbside Holds Pickup Begins May 22

The Metro Library Network, comprised of the Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha, and Marion Public Libraries, will begin offering low or no-contact curbside hold pickup of library materials beginning Friday, May 22.

All metro libraries are currently closed to the public to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our communities. All library programs and events, both public and private, have been cancelled through June 16. Due dates on library materials have been moved to June 16, 2020.

At this time, book drops and materials returns are not open and patrons are asked to keep materials until further notice. Additional time is needed to implement public health recommendations for material sanitation and quarantine.

“Our libraries have been working behind the scenes to prepare to provide curbside hold pickups so that our patrons can one again access library materials,” said Jeaneal Weeks, Hiawatha Public Library Director. “Safety of our staff and patrons is always our number one priority and we are now confident in our process and knowledge to be able to offer this service.”

All library materials distributed have either undergone a quarantine period or been disinfected to help prevent possible exposure of germs. Library staff have also established low or no-contact delivery methods for materials at each location to additionally reduce the risk of exposure.

“Our community is in need of these materials while they are staying safely at home as much as if not more than when they were able to come into our buildings,” said Hollie Trenary, Marion Public Library Director. “We have been working diligently to provide access to our digital resources but for many of our patrons there is no replacement for physical materials.”

“We continue to monitor the situation and plan for a gradual and thoughtful reopening of our public libraries,” said Dara Schmidt, Cedar Rapids Public Library Director. “Our libraries are critical community resources and we look forward to being able to provide services to all of our patrons.”

In addition to the opportunity to access physical materials through curbside hold pickup, fines have been waived for all library materials.

“We had a plan to cancel all library fines as of July 1, 2020, based on research and budget discussions,” said Schmidt. “This pandemic has caused us change that start date to ensure our community has no barriers to accessing our materials and services.”

Details on going fine free can be found here: http://metrolibrarynetwork.org/mln/fine-free-mln/.

Library staff continue to provide service online and on the phone during operating hours with the exception of Sundays. Additionally, programs are being offered virtually through the Library’s social media channels. The public is invited to use these resources daily for updated content.

Please refer to the Linn County Department of Health, Iowa Department of Public Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website for frequently asked questions on COVID-19.

  1. I am so excited that you are almost ready to start curbside pick-up! I have made a conscious effort to use the library instead of buying books….that money is better put toward donating money to the library so my shelves don’t overflow and more people can enjoy the titles! The staff at the Hiawatha Library are always so accommodating, and I really appreciate how all of the Metro Libraries cooperate! Thanks so much!

  4. I have books labeled available for pickup when notified at Ladd. Should I come for pickup or should I wait for a notification? How will I be notified if I need to wait?

    • Your notification will alert you they are available for pickup at the selected Library. If they still say “available for pickup when notified” they aren’t ready quite yet but you’ll be alerted when they are. Thanks for your patience.
