Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day began in 1970 and was recognized worldwide in 1990 where it is celebrated in 192 countries according to the non-profit Earth Day Network. It is a day when we come together globally and locally to ask we can better conserve resources and raise public awareness about the issues and challenges that face our planet. Here are some picks to help inform, engage, and advocate for our planet.

Non-Fiction-Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring

“We stand now where two roads diverge. But unlike the roads in Robert Frost’s familiar poem, they are not equally fair. The road we have long been traveling is deceptively easy, a smooth superhighway on which we progress with great speed, but at its end lies disaster. The other fork of the road — the one less traveled by — offers our last, our only chance to reach a destination that assures the preservation of the earth.”
― Rachel Carson, Silent Spring

Published in 1962, these words are as relevant as they were then. Silent Spring was a major impetus for Earth Day, where Carson wrote that harmful pesticides were wreaking havoc with the environment and with human systems. Carson was spurred to write the book after she received a letter from her friend who has noticed birds dying out. Carson correlated the synthetic chemicals on the ecosystem collapse and much of her research focused on scientist’s findings of the detrimental impact of these pesticides. This book was instrumental and led to the formation of the US Environmental Protection Act and public awareness that helped spur World Earth Day. We have the Audiobook, Ebook, and movie in our Hoopla collection.
