The Cedar Rapids Public Library invites you to celebrate the end of the Summer Dare with our Summer Dare Circus Party on Saturday, July 27, from 10 am to Noon at the Downtown Library. This community celebration is our final event in the 2019 Summer Dare, the Cedar Rapids Public Library’s inter-generational summer learning program.
All ages are invited to our outdoor festival on the Urban Plaza to wrap up the Summer Dare! All activities are free and open to everyone.
Are you ready to try your hand at the dunk tank? We have some special guests joining the fun today. Take your aim at Library Director Dara Schmidt, Iowa State Director of the Humane Society Preston Moore, or Emily Zimmon, Homeless Prevention Specialist for Willis Dady.
Make your own circus tent hat and take the phone home with you.
Remember, summer isn’t quite over yet. There’s still plenty of time to keep reading before school starts in the fall. Reading all summer helps keep you on grade level when classes start again. Keep up the good work!
Do you wonder what the future has in store for you? Stop by our fortune tellers to find out!
Reading together counts! Children become readers on the laps of their parents, so remember to keep reading together.
Join us in Whipple Auditorium for Tumbling with Twisters Gymnastics at 10:30 am and 11:30 am.
Ready for a tasty treat? We have some fun circus food to keep you going: cotton candy, sno cones, and, of course, popcorn.
Visit the Greyhound Café to get your hands on an iced coffee or latte and try one of their amazing cookies.
You can read books, magazines, graphic novels, comic books, even audiobooks!
All your reading time has really added up this summer. Join us at 11:40 am to find out exactly how many minutes we have read as a community!
The Summer Dare Circus Party is generously sponsored by Green State Credit Union (formerly University of Iowa Community Credit Union).
About the Summer Dare
The 2019 Summer Dare includes a reading challenge for all ages, programs and special events designed to encourage lifelong learning, intergenerational programs, and unexpected experiences at the library and beyond. The program began June 2 and runs through August 3. Participants can register online at summerdare.crlibrary.org or at both the Ladd Library and the Downtown Library.
Everyone receives a Book Bag and a coupon for a free Friends Book Nook book simply by signing up. All who complete Summer Dare will receive a free book (adults receive another Friends Book Nook Coupon). Additionally, readers will get a free book for every 300 additional minutes read through August 3.
To complete the Summer Dare, participants must read 600 minutes. Participants are also encouraged to complete as many dares as possible by August 3. Track your minutes read and dares completed throughout the program on the website summerdare.crlibrary.org. A list of the Dares can be found throughout the Summer Dare guide or on the Summer Dare website.
Participants can stop in to either library location throughout the summer and visit the Dare Desk to register, record their progress, turn in their completed reading logs, and add puff-balls to the Dare Drop. The Dare Drop is a physical representation of all the reading and dares being done throughout the summer.
Thank you to our Summer Dare Sponsors: Cedar Rapids Public Library Foundation, Hills Bank and Trust, the Friends of the Cedar Rapids Public Library, and The Gazette.
