Teens ages 12 – 18 are DARED to register for free half-day camps at the Cedar Rapids Public Library as part of the 2019 Summer Dare. The 2019 Summer Dare is not your average summer reading program. It is an intergenerational summer learning program that challenges the entire community to get out, explore, learn, connect, and, of course, read.
Teen Camps are a unique way in which the Library connects with teens during the summer, offering an experiential opportunity at no cost to participants.
June 17 – 21, 12:30-4:30 pm, Downtown Library
Storytelling and writing help us to convey our thoughts, feelings, and experiences. This camp will look at different forms of writing and storytelling. Each day will focus on a different style including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and graphic novels. Clever writing prompts and games will get you inspired and ready to write. All experience levels are welcome.
Escape Room Project
June 24-28, 12:30-4:30 pm, Ladd Library
Are you a puzzle expert? Do you like problem solving? How about storytelling? Creating an Escape Room is probably for you. Work with a group to make your own Escape Room. Find interesting concepts, develop ideas, and decide how your Escape Room will work. Puzzles and challenges determine how successful an Escape Room will be and if the participants will enjoy it. Find out what you’re capable of and escape the room.
July 8-12, 12:30-4:30 pm, Downtown Library
Time to try something new and do it yourself. With this camp for teens, we dare you to DIY. Create and discover projects from wiring to cardboard cutting. You’ll work on your own to design and build projects. It’s all about you and your creative flair.
How to Survive
July 22-26, 12:30-4:30 pm, Ladd Library
The world is ending, but you know what to do! Immerse yourself in our post apocalyptic world and learn how to survive. With your team, you will learn different life skills and sciences to keep you alive. For this week of camp, you will live in the broken world using only the skills you’ve gained to survive. From sewing to creating traps, you never know what you’ll need.
Camps are free to attend but space is limited and registration is required. Attendance at all five days of camp is required. Visit events.crlibrary.org to register.
The 2019 Summer Dare includes a reading challenge for all ages, programs and special events designed to encourage lifelong learning, intergenerational programs, and unexpected experiences at the library and beyond. The program begins June 2 and runs through August 3. Participants can register online at summerdare.crlibrary.org or beginning June 2 at both the Ladd Library and the Downtown Library.
