Families come in all shapes and sizes and can experience so many changes from divorce to a new baby. This fall even the Library welcomed a new addition – the Family section – in the Downtown children’s library. This section is full of picture books featuring predominately human characters with different family structures. These families may have a large amount of siblings, a single parent, a close knit extended family of grandparents or aunts and uncles, or a blended family after remarriage. These books also feature family-related events that might be more difficult to explain to a child such as adoption, marriage, divorce, and a family death. It is essential to the Library’s mission that all of our youngest patrons see themselves in our collection and the Family section is a great way to highlight this. Check out the latest issue of OPEN+ to explore some of the great options available in the new Family section.
