Summer Dare Celebration July 29 in Greene Square

Summer Dare Celebration July 29 in Greene Square

The Cedar Rapids Public Library invites you to celebrate the end of the Summer Dare with our Summer Dare Celebration on Saturday, July 29, from 10 am to Noon in Greene Square. This community celebration is our final event in the 2017 Summer Dare, the Cedar Rapids Public Library’s intergenerational summer learning program.

At 11 am, we will announce the (nearly) final number of minutes read during the program with the goal of reaching 1,000,000 minutes read. This announcement will be held on the lawn in Greene Square with the Library in the background.

All ages are invited to our outdoor festival in Greene Square to wrap up the Summer Dare! Delight in the magic of Magician Tim Stolba; see the Iowa Raptors up close; enjoy free popcorn from Cedar Rapids Civil Rights Commission; and take a selfie to show of our National Medal.

Activities also include the Jungle Bus, face painting, crafts, music, games, and area businesses and organizations volunteering time and talent to make this a party not to be missed.

These organizations, among many others, will be present for the fun:

  • The Gazette
  • Iowa Raptor Project
  • Indian Creek Nature Center
  • National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library
  • Cedar Rapids Civil Rights and Donna the Anti-Discriminatory Dolphin
  • The History Center
  • Magician Tim Stolba
  • Greyhound Deli & Café

The Summer Dare Celebration is sponsored by Rockwell Collins.

About the Summer Dare

The 2017 Summer Dare is not your average summer reading program. It is an intergenerational summer learning program that challenges the entire community to explore it, move it, rhyme it, celebrate it, connect it, imagine it, create it, and inspire it!

The 2017 Summer Dare includes a reading challenge for all ages, weekly themed activities designed to encourage lifelong learning, intergenerational programs, and unexpected experiences at the library and beyond. The program runs through July 30. Participants can register online at summerdare.crlibrary.org or at both the Ladd Library and the Downtown Library.

Everyone receives a free Dare Journal and a coupon for a free Friends Book Nook book simply by signing up. All who complete Summer Dare will receive a free book (adults receive another Friends Book Nook Coupon). Additionally, readers will get a free book for every 300 minutes read throughout the Summer Dare.

To complete the Summer Dare, participants must read 600 minutes by July 30. Track your minutes read and dares completed throughout the program on the website summerdare.crlibrary.org.

Participants can stop in to either library location throughout the summer and visit the Dare Desk to register, record their progress, turn in their completed reading logs, and get puff-balls to add to the Dare Drop. The Dare Drop is a physical representation of all the reading and dares being done throughout the summer.
