Yes! Jane Lynch, the scene stealing, Emmy and Golden Globe winning actress who plays bully Sue Sylvester on TV’s Glee, has written a children’s book about a bully. Marlene – playground tyrant and queen of mean – struts and swaggers all over town until a child finally stands up to her. As other kids follow suit, Marlene’s power over them diminishes until Marlene’s meanness breaks (into one hundred twenty-three pieces).
Marlene, Marlene, Queen of Mean is a good read for young elementary school students. The approach to bullying may be over-simplified, but I appreciate the way Marlene reluctantly reforms, subtly reinforcing what we all know: change is tough, even for bullies.
“You see, it’s a breeze to learn how to tease; it’s harder, sometimes to be decent.” -Jane Lynch
