Cedar Rapids Public Library Groundbreaking Celebration Saturday, May 5

The Cedar Rapids Public Library invites the community to a special Groundbreaking Celebration at the site of the new downtown library on Saturday, May 5, from 10 am to Noon. A brief program will be held at 10 am, followed by activities and refreshments for the whole family to enjoy.

“Literacy and lifelong learning are never out of style in a community pursuing excellence,” said Library Director Bob Pasicznyuk. “The only thing better than celebrating the groundbreaking of a new public library is opening its doors.”

The Groundbreaking Celebration will include crafts, balloon animals, coffee and cookies. Information and renderings of the new Library will be available for viewing. The event will take place rain or shine under a large tent located on the future site of the Urban Plaza.

The Cedar Rapids Public Library will be located on the 400 block of 4th Avenue in downtown Cedar Rapids, across from Greene Square.

The new Library is anticipated to open in summer of 2013. The building budget sources include $26 million from FEMA, $10 million grant from I-JOBS, $4.2 million from the City of Cedar Rapids LOST funds, grants and private fundraising.

The 95,000 square foot building will cost $21.8 million to build, with contents, land, professional fees and contingency bringing the total estimated project budget to $45.6 million.

People are encouraged to wear closed-toe shoes.
