The Hunter is another great standalone thriller by John Lescroart. One of Lescroart’s dynamic, recurring characters, San Francisco private investigator Wyatt Hunt, stars in a very private story about family and identity. The Hunter begins with Hunt receiving a cryptic text about the biological parents who abandoned him: “How did ur mother die?” We quickly learn that his biological mother was murdered and his biological father, who was tried twice for the crime but never convicted, disappeared long ago. Interesting ties to the Jonestown Massacre complicate things as Hunt digs to find his truth.
You may find The Hunter a bit of a departure from Lescroart’s usual tone and pace. This one is a bit slower and a lot more personal – but a thriller nonetheless. It’s a good read with characters and places we’ve grown to love.
