Adult Programming at the Cedar Rapids Public Library

Adult Programming at the Cedar Rapids Public Library

There are a variety of theories on what type of programming should be offered at the library. Some people are adamant that only programs which have some element of literature involved should be presented by the library, such as author readings or book clubs. Others are very supportive of programs which may seem more recreational, like a cooking class or art class. The Iowa City Public Library is hosting a Royal Wedding Viewing Party, for example.

The library partners with a variety of community organizations and individuals to provide programs throughout the year. A great example of this is the weekly “Play and Learn” program held at the Library. Hosted by the Parent Education Consortium and sponsored by the United Way of East Central Iowa, Grant Wood Area Education Agency, and Linn County Iowa State Extension office, this program is designed for very young children and preschoolers. Each Tuesday and Thursday morning at 9:30 am the CRPL Seuss Room is full of toddlers playing with educational toys and parents learning ways to interact with their children.

Other community partnerships happen throughout the year, such as the Doodlebugs program with the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art, or the Pied Piper Concert Series with Orchestra Iowa. SCORE partners with the Metro Library Network to provide classes on starting your own business. These are just a few examples.

Despite having already worked with several groups and planning regular programs throughout the year, the Library is always looking for adult programming that meets the needs and wants of our community. We look for your ideas. What kind of adult programming would you like to see at the Cedar Rapids Public Library?

Some examples include:

  • adult art programs (we currently offer a monthly program)
  • cooking demonstrations
  • writing workshops
  • English conversation group
  • gardening workshops
  • film series
  • book discussions (we currently have a monthly book club reading popular fiction)
  • adult story time

We know that the best attended programs are those that meet the current needs of our customers: you. Please leave your ideas here on our blog. Who knows? You may just see your idea for a program on the calendar someday in the near future!
