Computer Access at the Library
Internet computers at the Downtown Library

The Library offers computer access to the public. Computer access is available at the downtown Library and West Side Branch. The Library provides access for:

  1. Searching the Library's catalog
  2. Finding information on the internet
  3. Office applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  4. Telephone ports for dial-up internet usage
  5. Wireless internet connectivity

Catalog Access
All of the Library's computers, except the Office application workstations, have access to the catalog. There are several computers throughout the library for catalog use only. There is no time limit on the 'catalog only' computers. Catalog access is available at both the downtown Library and West Side Branch.

Internet Access
The Library provides free access to the internet. The Library limits internet usage to (1) session each day, with each session a maximum of 60 minutes. To access the internet users must have a valid library card and personal identification number (PIN). If a patron does not have a PIN, the patron can go to any service desk to have a PIN added. Patrons with fines of $3 or more will not be allowed internet access until the patron's balance is less than $3. Internet access is available at both the downtown Library and West Side Branch. Patrons must also agree to the Cedar Rapids Public Library Computer Access policy before they can have access to the Internet.

Office Applications
Microsoft Word XP, Excel XP and PowerPoint XP are available on four computers. There is no time limit on these computers. Assistance with resume uploading is provided by the Information Desk. Floppy disks can be purchased for $1 from the Account Services Desk. This service is at the downtown Library only.

Printing
Patrons can print from any of the public computers. The Library charges $0.10 for black-and-white pages and $0.50 for color pages. Color printing is not available at the West Side Branch.

Telephone ports for dial-up internet usage
The Library has telephone ports in all the study rooms. Patrons with modem-equipped laptops can use the telephone ports to connect to their internet service provider. This service is available at the downtown Library only.

Wireless Internet Access
Wireless internet access is available at the downtown Library for patrons with a laptop and wireless card. Click here for information about our wireless internet access.
