Policy 6.01 - Library Branches

Branches of the Cedar Rapids Public Library function as arms of the main library in the delivery of services to the community. They do not operate as independent units but receive direction, support and services from the main library. The primary purpose of branches is to provide convenient access to materials and programs at remote locations without duplicating all the services of the main library.

The service goals of the branches are as follows:

  1. To provide access to popular materials used by children and adults.
  2. To support reading programs for children by providing access to additional materials.
  3. To serve as alternate locations for programming.

Branch services will emphasize material checkout, issuing of library cards, and programming. Requests for research and in-depth information will be referred to the main library. Patrons who cannot find a particular item in the branch collection are encouraged to take advantage of the library's delivery system.

Selection, while emphasizing popularity, will still be based on the criteria of demand and need as outlined in the General Selection Policy. Less popular and research-oriented materials will be housed at the main library. The arrangement and display of the collection may depart from traditional methods but must provide the user with the best possible access to popular material. Seating may be provided depending on available floor space.

To allow for rapidly changing demographic patterns, branch locations must be chosen with flexibility and service to the whole community in mind.
