Policy 4.05 - Vandalism Policy

The Cedar Rapids Public Library has an obligation to ensure that its building, grounds, furnishings and materials are protected against deliberate malicious damage or destruction.

The library director, assistant director, or the supervisor-in-charge will take the following action if someone is caught in the act of destroying property.

Library Facilities, Grounds and Furnishings

  1. The police will be notified and a complaint filed if the damage requires professional cleaning, repair, or replacement.
  2. If the damage is superficial and can be removed by cleaning, the person responsible will be asked to clean the area. If the individual refuses, the cost of cleaning will be added to that individual's library account. If an established account does not exist, the police will be summoned and a complaint filed. All cleaning charges delinquent after 60 days will be turned over to our collection agency.
  3. If a disturbance results in damage to library property, those involved will be required to make restitution to the library.

Library Materials

If someone if caught in the act of damaging or destroying library materials, the replacement cost will be added to that individual's library account. If an established account does not exist and the person refuses to pay for the damaged material, the police will be called and a complaint filed.
