Where can I park? Is parking free?

Free non-metered parking is available for up to two hours in the south lot.

This is enforced during library hours every day. Your library card must be in good standing in order to take advantage of the free two-hours of parking. If you have any questions regarding your account, please talk to a staff member or give us a call at (319) 261-READ.

Parking is always free downtown after 6 pm on weekdays and all day on Saturday and Sunday. The Parking Ramp is open to all on every level at no cost on weekends, unless there is a special event which may charge a small fee.

Library card holders receive up to two hours of free parking at any metered space in the 4th Avenue Parking Ramp, or any of the spaces around the library block or Greene Square (currently unavailable due to construction). Here’s how it works!

  1. When you pull into a space, make note of your space number and the time limit. Blue signs indicate accessible parking.
  2. You may need to wake up the machine. To do this, press any button on the keypad. The next screen will ask you to enter the space number that was listed on the signage by the parking space.
  3. You will then be given two options: 1) “Purchase ticket” or 2) “Add more time.” If you are initially purchasing time for your space, press 1. If you would like to add more time, press 2.
  4. The library will validate up to two hours of parking per visit. Select the appropriate coupon option with the desired length of time and enter your coupon code. Your coupon code is the last eight digits of your library card number. You can only use it once a day, no matter what length of time you choose, so please keep that in mind.
  5. If you’re using the coin payment option, just add coins until the desired time is reached. If you are using a credit or debit card, insert the card and remove quickly, then press (1) to add time or choose the maximum time allowed. Once the desired time has been reached, hit okay to finalize the transaction.
  6. If you would like a receipt for personal or business records, choose “OK.” If you do not need a receipt, choose “Cancel.” After you have chosen, your transaction will be complete.
There is a parking kiosk located inside the north vestibule of the downtown library for your convenience. You can also use your library card at any of the kiosks located around the park, around our block, or in the 4th Avenue Parkade. If you have trouble or questions, library staff will work to assist you. Or call PARK Cedar Rapids at (319) 365-7275.

How are late fees & fines assessed?

View our Policies page for complete fines and fees tables.

If a person’s fines reach $20.00, various privileges including borrowing of materials, use of items within the library, and use of iBistro are suspended.
A courtesy reminder is made three times after items are due. If fines are not paid or materials not returned, patron’s accounts may be turned over to a collection agency. If an account is referred to a collection agency, there is an additional $10.00 collection fee.

The Code of Iowa Section 714.5 considers materials kept longer than two months prima facie evidence of ‘intent to deprive’.

Refunds will be given for lost items that are found and returned in good condition within 6 months of the loss date.

How do I renew an item?

Most items at the Cedar Rapids Public Library can be renewed twice. Some items like Quickflicks and Quick Pick items cannot be renewed. Items that have holds on them cannot be renewed.

The Library offers three ways for you to renew items.

1.  Renew via the internet

You can renew items by accessing your account via the internet. You can view your account by clicking here or by clicking on ‘My Account’ in our Catalog.

You will be prompted for your library card number and PIN. Once you have entered your account, select the items you wish to renew and click on the ‘Renew items’ button. Items that have been renewed will show the updated due date.

2.  Renew via the Self-Serve line

You can also renew items by calling our Self-Service Line at (319) 398-7405. This automated service will step you through the process to renew items. Once an item has been renewed the system will tell you the new due date.

3.  Renew via the telephone

You can also renew items by calling any location of the Metro Library Network during the hours they are open.

How do I place an item on hold?

Holds can be placed on nearly any item that circulates at the library. For most accounts, you can have up to 20 items on hold at any one time. You can be notified by email, telephone or mail when a reserved item is available for pickup. Items can be held at any of the Metro Libraries regardless of where you live. In our Catalog, you can place holds on existing items as well as items that are on order or that are being processed by our cataloging staff. Once a hold has been placed on an item, you can access your account online to see your position in the hold queue.
