Adopt-A-Shelf Volunteer Training

Thank you for joining the Library as an Adopt-A-Shelf volunteer! Your gift of time helps the Library better maintain our books, movies, and music while keeping our spaces looking their best for all patrons.
We are excited to offer this virtual training for starting our new volunteers and as an on-going resource for seasoned volunteers. Below are step-by-step training instructions to prepare you for your Adopt-A-Shelf volunteer role and some additional training handouts for you to reference.

Step 1: "Adopt-A-Shelf Introduction" Video

Watch a training video including an overview of the program, a list of the duties for the role, and a brief introduction to the Library’s shelving structure.

Step 2: "Shelf Reading 101" Video

Watch a training video on how to shelf read materials at the Library. Materials covered include Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Biography materials.

Watch a training video to see the process of shelf reading in action, learn what to do with materials that are on the shelves incorrectly, see examples of straightened shelves, and learn about items on display.

Step 8: Shelf Reading Practice Game

We’ve designed a game for you to practice shelf reading. Click here: Online Shelf Reading Game.
You must complete all three levels for your adopted section – Fiction or Non-Fiction.
If you have adopted a section that is not specifically Fiction or Non-Fiction, please contact us at volunteer@crlibrary.org to determine which practice session would be right for you.

Step 9: Complete the online quiz

Complete the online Adopt-A-Shelf volunteer quiz here: Online Quiz.
To login, you will need the Username and Password that was provided to you in your initial Adopt-A-Shelf training email. If you need that information again, please contact us at volunteer@crlibrary.org.

Step 10: Schedule your in-person training

After you have completed your online quiz, please send an email to volunteer@crlibrary.org to schedule your 20-minute in-person training.
Be sure to include the following:
1. your name,
2. preferred Library location,
3. adopted shelf section (if known),
4. and dates and times that would work for you to come in for a training in the next two weeks.
We will then work with our staff to schedule a training time and confirm your appointment with you.
