2018 Summer Dare

2018 Summer Dare

The Cedar Rapids Public Library is daring YOU to connect with the community and keep learning all summer long. The 2018 Summer Dare is not your average summer reading program. It is an inter-generational summer learning program that challenges the entire community to get out, explore, learn, connect, and, of course, read.

“Participating in a summer reading program helps to keep kids reading at grade level throughout those summer months when they aren’t in school,” said Dara Schmidt, Director at the Cedar Rapids Public Library. “We are creating a culture of literacy in Cedar Rapids by developing an inter-generational program that reaches not only kids but the adults in the community as well. Kids, teens, adults, families, seniors, singles, everyone is encouraged to participate and to engage with their community through the Summer Dare.”

The 2018 Summer Dare includes a reading challenge for all ages, programs and special events designed to encourage lifelong learning, intergenerational programs, and unexpected experiences at the library and beyond. The program begins June 3 and runs through July 28. Participants can register online at summerdare.crlibrary.org or beginning June 3 at both the Ladd Library and the Downtown Library.

Everyone receives a Summer Dare Journal and a coupon for a free Friends Book Nook book simply by signing up. All who complete Summer Dare will receive a free book (adults receive another Friends Book Nook Coupon). Additionally, readers will get a free book for every 300 additional minutes read through July 28.

To complete the Summer Dare, participants must read 600 minutes. Participants are also encouraged to complete as many dares as possible by July 28. Track your minutes read and dares completed throughout the program on the website summerdare.crlibrary.org.

Some can be done in the library but many can be done throughout the community or even at home. A list of the Dares can be found throughout the Summer Dare guide or on the Summer Dare website.

Participants can stop in to either library location throughout the summer and visit the Dare Desk to register, record their progress, turn in their completed reading logs, and add puff-balls to the Dare Drop. The Dare Drop is a physical representation of all the reading and dares being done throughout the summer.

The CRPL Summer Dare Kick-Off Party will be held at the Ladd Library on Sunday, June 3, from 2 pm to 4 pm. Everyone is invited to attend and get registered for the Summer Dare, participate in activities, including a bouncy house, face painting, games, special guests, and more!

We encourage participants to share their progress with us on social media using the hashtags #CorridorrReads. Add it to photos of your favorite summer reads, lists of books you’ve checked out at your library, or a program or event you plan to attend. We even have additional hashtags to get you started. Each week during the summer reading program, libraries will use the following hashtags to generate conversation:

  • Monday: #choosekindness – share example of how you are choosing to be kind or how someone was kind to you
  • Wednesday: #summershelfie – show us your bookshelf or a fun display at your library
  • Thursday: #weekendreads – what are you reading this weekend?

We will give away a piece of library swag each week during the summer to someone who participates in the #CorridorReads campaign. In order to win the drawing, you must follow one of the participating libraries on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook, post a photo and include the hashtag #CorridorReads in the caption.

Special events for all ages will be held throughout the CRPL Summer Dare. For a complete listing, visit our event calendar at events.crlibrary.org, or pick up a CRPL Summer Dare guide at the Library.
