The Cedar Rapids Public Library is daring YOU to connect with the community and keep learning all summer long. The 2017 Summer Dare is not your average summer reading program. It is an intergenerational summer learning program that challenges the entire community to explore it, move it, rhyme it, celebrate it, connect it, imagine it, create it, and inspire it!

“Participating in a summer reading program helps to keep kids reading at grade level throughout those summer months when they aren’t in school,” said Dara Schmidt, Director at the Cedar Rapids Public Library. “We are creating a culture of literacy in Cedar Rapids by developing an intergenerational program that reaches not only kids but the adults in the community as well. Kids, teens, adults, families, seniors, singles, everyone is encouraged to participate and to engage with their community through the Summer Dare.”
The 2017 Summer Dare includes a reading challenge for all ages, weekly themed activities designed to encourage lifelong learning, intergenerational programs, and unexpected experiences at the library and beyond. The program begins June 5 and runs through July 31. Participants can register online at summerdare.crlibrary.org or beginning June 5 at both the Ladd Library and the Downtown Library.
Everyone receives a Summer Dare Journal and a coupon for a free Friends Book Nook book simply by signing up. All who complete Summer Dare will receive a free book (adults receive another Friends Book Nook Coupon). Additionally, readers will get a free book for every 300 additional minutes read through July 30.
To complete the Summer Dare, participants must read 600 minutes. Participants are also encouraged to complete as many dares as possible by July 30. Track your minutes read and dares completed throughout the program on the website summerdare.crlibrary.org.
Dares are based on the theme of each week. Some can be done in the library but many can be done throughout the community or even at home. A list of the Dares can be found throughout the Summer Dare guide or on the Summer Dare website.
Participants can stop in to either library location throughout the summer and visit the Dare Desk to register, record their progress, turn in their completed reading logs, and add puff-balls to the Dare Drop. The Dare Drop is a physical representation of all the reading and dares being done throughout the summer.
The CRPL Summer Dare Kick-Off Party will be held at the Ladd Library on Sunday, June 4, from 1 pm to 4 pm. Everyone is invited to attend and get registered for the Summer Dare, participate in activities, including the inflatable Jungle Bus, face painting, balloon animals, special guests, and more!
We encourage participants to share their progress with us on social media using the hashtags #2017summerdare and #notyouraveragelibrary.
Special events for all ages will be held throughout the CRPL Summer Dare. For a complete listing, visit our event calendar on our website at www.crlibrary.org or pick up a CRPL Summer Dare guide at the Library.
