Ready Steady Cook!

You remember being a child and desperately wanting to make your parents a delicious breakfast in bed. You head to the kitchen to gather the flour, sugar, chocolate chips, maple syrup and black beans. Then you hit the fridge and grab eggs, milk, ginger and orange juice. You set about making the greatest breakfast on the planet. The butter is hard and doesn’t mix very well. Still it doesn’t stop you from adding the milk and the ginger and the maple syrup. Finally, you head to the garden to pick the most delightful bouquet of daisies and dandelions to garnish the plate. Besides Christmas it is the only time you and your sibling get along. Voila! You head down the hallway, tray in hand and present your culinary masterpiece to your parents; eagerly grinning and watching them take every bite.

For two years now, every Sunday morning my husband and I cringe because we hear our kids doing the same thing. I’ve been served everything from peanuts in their shell with leftover pasta, a basil ginger maple syrup orange juice smoothie and for the most part, it’s all been terrible! Kids Cook 1-2-3 by Rozanne Gold helps kill two birds with one stone. First, the recipes (mostly) include only three ingredients so your groceries won’t be decimated too much. Next your kids will follow recipes and serve you food that is both edible and rather delicious (give or take a cat hair or two).

The author begins by explaining basic cooking techniques and how to successfully stock your pantry (be prepared to get a few extra ingredients on your next grocery list). Recipes include drinks, breakfast items, snacks, main course and desserts. This can be a great bonding time with kids. My kids also loved making the dishes by themselves (so long as the recipes did not involve the stove). I also loved the fact that there was advice in the book that kids had submitted.

So if you’re like me and you like being in the kitchen, love spending time cooking with your kids, or just don’t want to be served another abomination, check out Kids Cook 1-2-3 and I guarantee your Sunday mornings will get a lot better!
