The Mickey Bolitar Series by Harlan Coben

Mickey BolitarThe Mickey Bolitar detective series for Young Adults is a great set of page-turners by New York Times Bestselling author Harlan Coben. The series, Shelter, Seconds Away and Found, is character and plot driven – strong spinoffs of Coben’s wildly successful Myron Bolitar series. Each of the first two books stands alone, while providing great cliffhangers for their sequels
In the first book, Shelter, we meet Mickey, a high school sophomore and new kid in town. He is grieving over his father’s death, his mother’s long-term stay in drug rehab, and the fact that his parents never stayed in one place long enough for him to feel like it was home. Mickey lives with his dad’s brother, Myron Bolitar, even though the brothers were estranged years ago. And if all of that isn’t enough of a challenge, Mickey must hunt for the truth behind his parent’s mysterious past.
Shelter begins with a complete stranger – known to everyone in town as the Bat Lady – telling Mickey, who witnessed his father’s death, that his father is really alive. Then Mickey’s girlfriend, Ashley, goes missing, and Mickey enlists his friends to help him find her.
Fortunately, Coben has created a tiny cast of believably quirky high-schoolers: Mickey is clever, sarcastic and athletic, Ema has as many secrets as she has tattoos and black clothes, Spoon is adorkable and full of useless trivia, and Rachel is “the hottest girl in school.” This unconventional foursome becomes reluctant investigators from the start of the first book. Their relationships read authentically and their presence leads to multiple plot threads in all three books. Their search for answers leads them to discover the Abeona Shelter for youth, and the suspense builds through house fires, rescues, Nazis, and conspiracies.
Twists, turns, and quick wit make reading Shelter, Seconds Away and Found a pleasure for Harlan Coben’s legions of fans. And those of you who’ve never read his neatly plotted mysteries will finish the books wanting more.
