The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

ImageIf you haven’t read The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein, I highly recommend it as a goodness jump-start for 2014. The story is told from the perspective of a wonderful mutt named Enzo, who believes the Mongolian legend that dogs will be reincarnated in their next life as a human if they’ve earned it through their own “humanity”.  Enzo prepares for this journey with a Zen-like philosophy learned by watching TV car races at the feet of his companion, Denny Swift, a race car driver who just can’t catch a break.

Enzo is everything a dog should be:  loyal, sweet, good.  His philosophy of life touches the heart like only a good dog can. Enzo (named after Enzo Ferrari) speaks truth with a capital T, so much so that there are entire websites dedicated to Enzo quotes.  But don’t check them out until after you’ve read the book.  Spoilers!  And don’t be afraid to read this book because you don’t like sad animal stories.  It’s a thoughtful book with worthy heroes.

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein is available in multiple formats through the Metro Library Network.
