The Cedar Rapids Public Library (CRPL) kicks off the annual Summer Reading Program June 1. Programs are available for children (pre-school through grade 5), young adults (grades 6-12) and adults. Registration begins June 1 and the program runs through July 27. Register online at www.crlibrary.org or visit the Library to get started.
The Children’s Summer Reading Program is “Dream Big. Read!” and includes a variety of special programs and events. Children read or are read to by a caregiver in order to reach levels and receive special prizes, including the chance to win one of the three bicycles given away at the end of the summer. Activities include weekly story times held both at the library and out-and-about; craft programs, and films shown every Monday and Friday afternoon.
Special events include “We Dream Wednesdays,” a weekly program held at 1:30 pm encouraging children to dream about who they will be when they grow up. Guests include a helicopter pilot, ventriloquist, veterinarian and more!
Thursday Special Programs are each Thursday (10:30 am and 1:30 pm) and include visits from the MadCap Puppets, Tom Pease, and the Blank Park Zoo, among others. Children are encouraged to participate in the programs along with reading for prizes.
For young adults and adults, the program is “Choose Your Own Adventure” and encourages participants to read for prizes and choose from a variety of Library programs and services to gain additional entries for the grand prize, a Nook eReader. Prizes will be given to every participant who completes the program.
Special teen programs include a nine-week Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program, Good Eats: Cooking in the Library with the Linn County Extension Office, an Improv Workshop with Comics in Action, and a visit from YA author Jill Hathaway (Slide), along with more. Visit www.crlibrary.org for a complete listing.
The Summer Reading Program runs June 1 – July 27. Prizes will be drawn following the completion of the program.
The Children’s Summer Reading Program is sponsored by Hills Bank. The Young Adult and Adult Summer Reading Programs are sponsored by the Friends of the Cedar Rapids Public Library.
