May 1, 2024 – Library Journal named Meredith Crawford, Community Engagement Librarian at the Cedar Rapids Public Library, to its annual list of “Movers & Shakers: The People Shaping the Future of Libraries.”

The honor is given to just 50 library workers across the country each year. Crawford was named to the “Advocates” category for her work with youth at the Linn County Juvenile Detention Center.

Crawford launched the “Be Heard” program in 2021, a partnership to bring diverse books, discussions, and opportunities for self-expression to youth at the center. Audio recordings from some of those discussions have been listened to more than 400 times.

“We are so fortunate to have such amazing staff members, and Meredith is truly a star. She is driven by the mission, vision and values of our library, and she exudes passion for her work,” Cedar Rapids Public Library Director Dara Schmidt said. “This recognition is truly deserved!”

Two other Iowa librarians were also honored: Tyler Hahn, Library Director at Cherokee Public Library, and Zach Stier, Children’s Librarian at Ericson Public Library.

“Over the past 22 years, Library Journal’s Movers & Shakers awards have offered a compelling snapshot of what’s up and coming in the library world, as well as how it has changed,” the magazine wrote in the announcement. “Our 2024 Movers cohort represents a range of innovative, proactive, and supportive work; they are imaginative and kind and brave in a world that needs those qualities—and the results they produce—very much.”
